Printing to Adobe PDF virtual printer - fix
Printing to Adobe PDF virtual printer - fix
just a note... love font expert and was hoping to export (print) font catalogs out to PDF for backup/archive. Alas, printing to a PDF cause FontExpert to crash, at least with Acrobat Pro 7.0.
This defect is fixed in version: FontExpert 2004 Release 3.
Description:
When FontExpert 2004 ver. 6.0 Release 2 prints to "Adobe PDF" virtual printer (comes with Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0), an access violation occurs in AD2KREGP.DLL. Although this DLL is a part of Adobe PDF printer driver, we assume that it was a defect of FontExpert Release 2.
This problem doesn't occur with other PDF printers, such as Jaws PDF Creator.
(Later this thread will be moved to another forum: FontExpert Bugs, Symptoms, Reasons and Resolution.)

great, quick work!
fantastic work to fix this!
there was another issue when trying to print to PDF with some other utilities: some fonts carried licensing issues, and Acrobat would halt on multiple errors...but I will try with FontExpert on monday. It sounds like a 3rd party pdf printer is the real solution

As for me, I like the quality of files created with Adobe PDF virtual printer, although it seems we have not tested it so hard. You do stress tests.
Currently we keep an eye on printing to PDF with Adobe PDF and Jaws PDF Creator. As one of results, it seems that printing fonts that are installed permanently gives better results than printing fonts that are not installed. In some cases it is impossible to print a set of uninstalled fonts (the driver creates a text file with an error about missing font face), but you can print this set of fonts by installing them permanently.
Adobe PDF printer has a setting: "[x] Embed All Fonts" turned on by default. It is better to turn this option OFF if you are printing uninstalled fonts.
It seems printer driver fails to identify temporarily installed fonts and to locate file names when it is trying to embed fonts to a document. It is also an issue for FontExpert and our scheme of loading/unloading fonts during printing and we should optimize it.
It is just a tip - never forget to experiment with printer properties.

pdf weirdness
here is a pdf I just produced via Acrobat 7.0...the FontExpert Preview looks fantastic, but as you can see from the PDF there's just way too much weirdness (fonts being cut off, all i's being displayed etc.)
www . astrid . ca / download / 3000_fonts.pdf (it's about 5MB)
btw, ALL of the fonts in this library were Type1

Really great, thank you for pdf sample: 1472 fonts on 246 pages.
Yes, I also see that some samples are printed as iiiiii. If it is permitted by font license, please could you send several fonts that are printed as iiiii to support@? (We'd like to look at font properties, in any case we will delete font files after testing.)
In few cases the second line in the sample is cut off and font face is printed as Arial, it seems the font face is not preloaded correctly. But the most interesting is iiii print out - we will investigate it.
Which Adobe PDF printer options has been used for this 3000 fonts report?
It seems it is good idea to turn off all embedding, for example:
File/Print Setup.../(Adobe PDF printer)/Properties.../Adobe PDF Settings/Default Settings/Edit.../Fonts
[ ]Embed All Fonts
[ ]Subset embedded fonts when percent of characters used is less than: [100]%
When embedding fails: [Ignore]

Re: Printing to Adobe PDF virtual printer - fix
What is the interpretation for log pdf in a plot? I have to make a plot of the log probability density function of an action. I have to compare it's empirical log density with the normal log density. Why is it different from the normal form of pdf?

Re: Printing to Adobe PDF virtual printer - fix
Virtual PDF printer as a software implementation of a traditional (hardware) PostScript printer (try to search in Google: "printing pdf" for more information). If you can print something on a PostScript printer, you also should be able to print the same job to a "PDF virtual printer". There are many implementations of virtual printers. Virtual printer appear in the list of printers in Control Panel. So you can select virtual printer as a default printer to print your documents to. If you use some application that can print plots, you also should be able to print them on a virtual printer, such as PDF995, which creates a PDF file instead of printing on a paper sheets.
