NEXT VERSION ?

Post by Alex »

I know you probably can't give us a specific ETA for the next version/update, but can you give us somewhat of an idea ?! I mean, is it in a few weeks, in a few months, next summer, etc.

Can't wait for the new features ... in particularl the tags ... :P

Traditionally we released new versions every year in the middle of the year, between May and August. But we will plan/try to release new version 9 (FE 2007) in March but not earlier.

The release of version 9 is postponed to April or May.

But we plan to issue ver 8 release 4 that will include support to XP x64 and Vista (32-bit and x64).

Whenever it is released, I'd be interested to know if the next version will come with additional Missing Font Loader plugins. I would be specifically interested in plugins for Adobe Illustrator and Serif PagePlus. I don't know if its plugin architecture can handle this but another app I use a lot is Macromedia (now Adobe) Fireworks.

Thanks!

Since I've had so much luck getting an answer to my previous question...

Will the next version support the soon to be released Adobe Creative Suite 3 with InDesign CS3 in it? Again, any plans to add missing font loading plugins for other apps like Illustrator and maybe Photoshop and Fireworks?

The release of our plug-ins actually does not depend on the technical details of the next version 9. Currently we are developing version 9 which has many changes in user intrface and many new features. The development of new plug-ins will be the next step after the official release of version 9. Today at the end of March the version 9 is on the stage of alpha-release or 80%-ready. The plug-in for Adobe Illustartor is the first in the list, and also we will update the InDesign plug-in.
The plug-ins for Adobe products will have higher priority, but we have good relations with Serif Inc. developing PagePlus, and we also are considering a plug-in for PagePlus.

I just downloaded and tried version 9. I don't know if it was just me, but I could not stand the new interface. I am used to the old interface set up the way I had it - Folders on left, Character Table in the middle, Font Faces on right, and Text Sample at the bottom. I could not get the new version adjusted to the way I'm used to so I uninstalled it and went back to version 2006. Besides, currently I don't have $40 to buy the program. May just stick with the old one.

New version 10.0 supports Workspaces. You can reorder views and place them to desired positions. Then save/load desired workspace when needed. So you can organize a workspace that looks similar to views in older versions of FontExpert.
